Functional Vocational Training and Research Society
History and Journey

Started in 1993, the institutional set-up then known as a Forum was managed by an Executive Core Committee of experts nominated from to time under the care of a convener with a few staff and an Executive Secretary at Bangalore. This Forum was later registered in 2004 as a Society by name ‘Functional Vocational Training and Research Society’ (FVTRS). 450 vocational training projects were executed by the time it was formally registered. FVTRS as of mid 2011 has supported and completed 674 VT projects in various States in India.

FVTRS could extend its skill training activities to the tsunami hit 3 south Indian States as well from 2003 and implemented 64 projects in partnership with local NGOs where more than 6500 youth were trained to eke out a livelihood on their own.

From 2007 onwards FVTRS received funding support from European Union (EU) to further strengthen and initiate vocational training activities 8 north Indian States together with all connected stakeholders under the title 'Economic Empowerment through strengthening functional vocational training on viable trades and skills for marginalised communities'. This co-operation got further fillip from 2010 again with funding support from EU to open Regional Offices at Dimapur, Hyderabad and Jodhpur to deepen skills training in the adjoing States for inaccessible segements with the title 'Vocational Education and Training for Vulnerable and Marginalised Groups in 12 States in India' among the BRGF districts.

FVTRS is governed by a 7-member strong Governing Board which is supported by a 15-member General Body with the latter being elected from among the General Body members. A 5-member Advisory Committee advises the organisation on strategies, funding criteria and diverse fields of interventions. This apart, a Project Selection Committee decides on the merits of project proposals to approve for funding support by FVTRS.
